Chemicals Legislation
The European Union’s revision of its chemicals legislation is aimed at creating a consistent body of rules for all EU states. Degussa basically welcomes this. Experts at Degussa accompanied the legislative process by engaging themselves intensively in discussions on the topic and supporting the European chemical industry associations.
The new REACH chemicals ordinance came into effect on June 1, 2007.
REACH stands for the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals.
On the coming-into-effect of the European REACH directive on June 1, 2007, Dr. Klaus Engel, CEO of Degussa GmbH, declared: “We support REACH’s aim of further improving the protection of public health and the environment when dealing with chemicals, in accord with Degussa’s own principles. At the same time, we intend not only to uphold the industry’s competitiveness and powers of innovation, but to further strengthen them.”
“From the beginning, we engaged ourselves in the EU’s process to arrive at effective, efficient chemicals legislation, and got involved in the legislative process throughout Europe. Now REACH is in force and will naturally be implemented in our company as well,” explained Ralf Blauth, Human Resources Officer and Degussa’s board member in charge of environmental and safety affairs.
“We are in the process of recording how many and which of our substances are subject to REACH and are systematically preparing for pre-registration in a first step,” added Dr. Jochen Rudolph, head of the Environmental Affairs department. “Degussa is stepping up its communication with suppliers and customers with the aim of complying with the legal requirements in time, efficiently and flexibly.”
A special project team has been put in charge of this implementation process, to bundle the activities of the decentralized units and coordinate the necessary data and information for pre-registration and/or registration.
